On May 23, 1950, in Birmingham, Alabama, Golden Asberry Sr and Jennie M Asberry were blessed with the birth of Bobby Joe Asberry. Bobby graduated from C.W. Hayes High School in Birmingham, Alabama before being drafted into the United States Army in 1968. Bobby served in the Vietnam War and was honorable discharged in 1971. Bobby earned a National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Combat Medic Badge and Parachute Badge during his time in the military. In 1978, Bobby married Robin Fisher and to this union two sons, Jabari Asberry and Gerard Asberry were born. After the dissolution of that marriage, Bobby met and married Herlinda Sharrye Asberry on November 28, 1998, and they remained married until his untimely death. Together they parented two sons (Jabari and Gerard) and two daughters, Ashanti Strange and LaShanti Strange. Bobby and Herlinda enjoyed traveling together and hosting family gathering. They also enjoyed spending time with their fur babies Chloe and Kinlee. Bobby worked at Martin Luther King Jr Community Hospital for over 16 years as a Medical Assistant prior to obtaining his degree from Charles R Drew University of Medicine and Science as a Physician Assistant. Bobby worked as a Physician Assistant for over 25 years and he loved helping his patients. Bobby joined Transformation Church, formerly known as Praise Tabernacle, under the Pastoralship of Pastor Jody Moore in 2003 and was ordained to the Office of Elder on January 26, 2014. Bobby was affectionally known as Papi to his grandchildren, Elder Bobby to his church family and Uncle Bobby to many others whom he loved as his own. One of the things he found joy in doing was cooking lavish meals for his family during the holidays. He also enjoyed playing tennis, where he was a part of the Anderson Park Tennis Club. A few of his favorite hobbies were long distance bike riding and going to Big Bear to enjoy snow activities. Bobby enjoyed watching the Little Rascals and Alfalfa was his favorite character. He also enjoyed the movie the Christmas Story so much that he purchased a Red Ryder air rifle just like the one owned by Ralphie and puts in on display every Christmas. Bobby has traveled to over 12 countries and his favorite place to visit was Israel where he was able to walk the footsteps of Jesus. Bobby touched so many lives with his love and kindness and was a true inspiration to all. Bobby leaves to cherish his memories Wife, Herlinda Asberry, Children Jabari Asberry, Gerard Asberry, Ashanti Strange and LaShanti Strange, seven grandchildren, Kennedi Shorts, Malik Asberry, Mekhi Asberry, Trinity Asberry, Ryleigh Shorts, Jalen Asberry and Gabrielle Asberry, Brothers William (Lina) Pruitt, Golden (Ethel) Asberry Jr, Rev Dr Alfonso (Ruby) Asberry, Billy (Dolores-Cookie) Asberry and Andre (Ella) Asberry, Sisters Constance (David) Thomas and Patricia (Albert) Watson, Sister in Law Yong Asberry, a Host of Nieces and Nephews, Cousins, Extended Family and Friends who became Family. Bobby is preceded in death by his father Golden Asberry Sr, Mother Jennie Bostic Pruitt Asberry, brothers Rev John Stanton, Fred (Francis) Pruitt, Richard Asberry, Rev Donald Asberry and sister Rose Pruitt Jackson Johnson.
