Bruce Carter

August 28, 1955 — March 17, 2024

Bruce Carter aka “Brucie” or “Mockie” was born on August 28th, 1955, the first born to Miriam Travis and the late Edward “Rocky” Carter in Brooklyn, NY.

In 1969, at the age of 13, Bruce moved to San Francisco with his mother and sisters. As the oldest, he was often given tasks he didn’t want to do, like taking his sisters to karate or dance class. The move also solidified his love for the local teams. He and his longtime friends would cut coupons off of milk cartons so he could watch the 49ers at Kezar Stadium.

He graduated from George Washington High School in San Francisco, CA in 1973. For a brief period he attended San Francisco State. When he moved back to New York he worked as a furniture mover for 30 years.

In 2009, he met Marjorie McCarley. He relocated one last time to Corona, CA and spent 15 years with Marjorie until his passing.

Bruce LOVED sports. He played when he was young and that passion led to him being an avid fan. You could always find him watching sports, from golf to tennis, but basketball and football were his favorites. The NY Giants, NY Knicks, Golden State Warriors and the San Francisco 49ers were his teams; bantering about sports with his kids and friends was his favored pastime.

Music and Cooking were other loves of his. When Bruce was younger he participated in glee class and was in a acapella group. He later formed a singing group called Natural High and even gave their CD to Melvin Franklin, his favorite Temptation. Whenever and wherever music was playing, Bruce would sing along and dance. As a cook, Bruce would never hesitate to say his food was better than any restaurant. From his famous oxtails to his spicy chili to his well-loved steak, Bruce adored being in the kitchen. That was his way of giving love.

As a young man, Bruce took great care of his younger siblings, which led to him being a fierce protector when he was older. He adored his family, especially his children, above all else and was the glue that kept everyone together. His children were his world and he strove to be the best father he could for all of his kids, and succeeded in making them feel loved, safe and cared for in every way. Courtney, Darnell, Ryan & Keyera were truly blessed.

He was the definition of an individualist. He didn’t follow trends or people. He was his own person and sought out truthful people like him. He was always looking for a solution to a problem, and wouldn’t stop until he found one. Bruce was honest, boisterous, and passionate but above all smart. His love was like a tight hug you didn’t know you needed until he let go.

Bruce Carter entered eternal rest on Sunday, March 17th, 2024. He leaves his memory to be cherished by his mother, Miriam Travis; his aunts, Esther Travis, Irma Travis and Anne Fredd-Travis Esq.; his sisters, Leslie K.T. Carter, Renee C.T. Carter, Esq., Nadina Bartee, and Terri Sutom-Travis Bolden; his brothers, Carlton Anderson and Edward Rocky Carter Jr; the love of his life Marjorie McCarley; his children, Courtney Bowens, Darnell Carter, Ryan McCarley and Keyera Carter; his godson, Terrell Bartee; his grandchildren, Danae Carter, Deja Carter, Jacob Carter and Jalen Carter. He also leaves to mourn his nephews, nieces, cousins and close friends.
