Detective Richards' decorated law enforcement career spans over three decades. Detective Richards began his law enforcement career with the Merced County Sheriff's Department in 1986. In 1992, Detective Richards was hired by the Anaheim Police Department as Detention Officer. He was later sworn in as a Police Officer after graduating from the Orange County Sheriff's Academy on August 10, 1995. Detective Richards has worked several specialized assignments and has held numerous ancillary duties throughout his career, including several stints as a Patrol Officer, Family Crimes Detective, Field Training Officer (FTO), the Scout Sniper Unit, Primary Response Officer (PRO) Team, and the Honor Guard. In 2008, Detective Richards was selected as a Detective for the Resort Policing Team, where he worked for the remainder of his career. In addition to numerous Chief's commendations, Detective Richards was selected as the Veteran of Foreign Wars (VFW) Officer of the Year in 2000. Detective Richards is survived by his wife of 31 years, Marilyn, their children Shantel, Kaleigh, and Jarett, and five grandchildren. Detective Richards was not only a great police officer and public servant, but he was also an outstanding friend, husband, father, and grandfather. Detective Richards will be dearly missed, and his legacy lives on through all of us. Please keep Dave, his family, and his friends in your thoughts and prayers.
