Donald James Schumann 84 of Corona, California Born 5/1/36 in Topeka Kansas to Opal and Arndt Schumann and died 2/28/2021 at Corona Regional Hospital of complications to Covid. Education: Don earned a BS from Washburn University, K. 1966 Military: Don spent a years in the Navy where he was assigned to Seaplane patrol squadron VP -47, stationed in San Diego, CA. He made 2 tours to Japan from 1954-19S6. He was then assigned to a jet fighter training squadron, from 19S6-19S8, where he was Honorably discharged from the NAVY. Personal life: Don was married to Evelyn E Schumann on January 25, 1963. They were married for 53 years until her death in December of 2016. Their only son, Curt, was born February, 1968. Civilian life: Don had a background in heavy equipment operation, building missile silos, dams and highways, in the state of Kansas, from 1961-1963. He returned to college in 1963, and earned his Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, with a Minor in Chemistry, IN 1966. He was hired by the Department of Defense, to work in the Data Automation department, Naval fleet missile evaluation and analysis in Corona, CA. He worked as a Computer Systems Analyst, on IBM and Univac mainframe and mini computers. During this time frame, he learned computer languages and operating systems and put this knowledge to use in several projects, including being Project leader for the development of an information management system, known as IMSLANG, was implemented in 1970 and was utilized by the command. He retired in 1994, a total of 34 years of Naval service, where he retired as technical director for the command. Proceed in death: Father Arndt, Stepfather Bob, Mother Opal and wife Evelyn Survived by: Son Curt and wife Stephanie, 4 Grandchildren; Mallory and husband Jim, Christopher and wife Yehi, Nichole and husband Nando, Andrea, 2 great grandsons, Brayden and Isaac and a great granddaughter due in June. Additionally, the Schumann, Sheid and Smith families who live in Kansas. Attributes: Don Schumann was a great man who had many accomplishments. A kind and giving person, who would do anything for family and friends. He was not only the Patriarch of the family, but a great dad and Grandfather. Services: Will be April 09, 2021 from 12:00 P.M. - 1:00 P.M. at Thomas Miller Mortuary, in Corona, CA. A live video feed will be used for the services at the mortuary, for those who are unable to attend. Visitors welcome at the mortuary. Final internment, at Riverside National Cemetery. In lieu of cards or flowers, donations can be made to wounded warrior project, the USO or the Alzheimers or Parkinsons Association.
