"Edward J. Mitchell, born on April 9, 1929, passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 31, 2024, surrounded by his family in his home in Corona, CA. A man of immense courage, boldness, and determination, Edward lived in a way that was truly larger than life.
Ed proudly served his country in the Navy. Following this, he owned a business with a friend who would share flying lessons vouchers that would open the skies for Ed. His passion for flying carried him through a distinguished career as a pilot and airline captain, where he spent countless hours in the sky, doing what he loved most.
His strength and adventurous spirit were an inspiration to all who knew him, and his friends and family will remember him for his unwavering loyalty and dedication.
He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Ed was married to the love of his life, Phyllis, for sixty-nine years until her passing in May 2021. Their bond was one of true love and partnership, and they are now reunited.
Ed was also preceded in death by his mother Jaunita Tony (née Williams); step-father, Robert Tony; and sister, Kaye Baker.
He is survived by his children: Patricia (Stephen) Erwin, Al (Marna) Mitchell, and Curt (Elisabete) Mitchell; his grandchildren: Brendan (Kirsten), Ryan (Stephanie), Kieran, Devin, Colin, and Maryam (Tyler Schott) Erwin; Kyle (Emily), Erik, Megan, and Drew Mitchell; Gabriela (Liam) Mayes and Vanessa Garcia; great-grandchildren: Devin, Christian, Sean, Abigail, Trista, and Aviana Erwin; Dahlia and Azalea Mitchell; Oscar Mayes; and many fellow pilots and friends.
Edward's legacy of bravery and zest for life will continue to live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him. He will be deeply missed, but his memory will forever soar in the skies he loved so much."
The family of Ed Mitchell would like to extend their gratitude to the staff of Kaiser-Permanente’s Riverside’s hospice team for their endless compassion and support.
