To her friends- of which she had many- she was “Betty”, to her family she was “Bea”, to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren she was “Nanny” or “Nan”. Betty, the youngest child of John and Anne Mongoven, was born on February 9, 1928 in Superior, Wisconsin. She attended Cathedral High School and worked part-time at Woolworths. In 1951, Betty met and married the love of her life James “Jim” Joseph Winek. Together they raised four children: Tim, John, Mark and Kathy. In 1958, the family moved to Lynwood, California, where Betty became a medical assistant. In 1964, the family moved to Anaheim, California. It was here that sewing, one of Bettys hobbies, grew into a love of quilting. She was a member of several Orange County Quilting Guilds. Many of her quilts have been placed on public display. Betty tirelessly volunteered for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. When she retired, this became a full time avocation. During this time, she earned many awards, including the inaugural Orange County Volunteer of the Year and the 2004 Cameo Award- a national honor presented at the Komen Headquarters in Dallas, Texas. From 2000 until her passing, Betty resided in Yorba Linda, California. In addition to her immediate family, she is survived by six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and her sister Mary “Mayme” LaVelle. She was preceded in death by her grandson, Jeremy Pippin; sister, Jackie Wilson; and brother, Robert “Bob” Boyce. An exceptional woman, she will be missed by those whose lives she touched.
