Born June 22, 1929 in Acuitzeramo, Michoacn, Mexico Esperanza was the second oldest of ten children born to Sirino and Angelina Serrato. In 1949, Esperanza completed vocational school for sewing. She was a skilled seamstress who often made garments by making her own patterns. In 1952 Esperanza married Salud Cortez and they had three daughters Ortensia, Irma and Martha. After immigrating to the United States Salud and Esperanza had three more children Sandra, Saul and Gilbert. The family lived in Santa Ana California before settling in Corona in 1971. Esperanza passed away on May 20, 2020 at her home with her children by her side. She was preceded in death by her husband Salud Cortez and children Ortensia Sandoval and Gilbert Cortez. Esperanza is survived by her children Irma Cortes, Martha Ruiz, Sandra Ruiz and Saul Cortez, ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
