Obituary

Gary L. Matlack

January 3, 1948 – July 1, 2026

Gary L. Matlack passed away on July 1, 2026, at the age of 78. Born on January 3, 1948, he lived a rich and purposeful life marked by deep faith, devoted family, meaningful work, and a genuine love for adventure and the outdoors.

During the Vietnam era, Gary served his country while stationed in Germany, where he was assigned to guard the East German border. It was during this time that he met and married his beloved wife, Friedel. Their marriage, which began far from home, became the foundation of a lifelong partnership built on love, commitment, and shared purpose.

Together, Gary and Friedel raised four children: their oldest daughter Tiffiny, followed by Tanja, Timothy, and Gary II. Gary took great pride in his role as a husband and father. He was a steady presence in his children’s lives, instilling in them values of hard work, integrity, and faith. Family remained at the center of everything he did.

Gary was truly a man of many things. He earned his master’s degree in theology, which deepened his understanding and passion for sharing the Gospel. His faith in Yeshua was the guiding force of his life. He felt called to carry a cross throughout Southern California, boldly witnessing and sharing the Gospel with people from all walks of life. Whether on street corners, at events, or simply in everyday encounters, Gary’s commitment to his faith was visible and unwavering. He lived what he believed and was never afraid to let his light shine.

In addition to his theological studies and ministry, Gary became a certified service dog trainer, using his skills to help others through the companionship and support of well-trained dogs. Beyond his faith and service work, Gary had a deep appreciation for life’s simple and adventurous joys. He loved sailing, finding peace and freedom on the water. He enjoyed building and flying remote-control airplanes, combining his mechanical skill with his sense of wonder. Above all, he cherished being outdoors — breathing in fresh air, exploring nature, and finding renewal away from the busyness of daily life.

In 1984, Gary founded GMC Electrical, Inc. What began as a vision became a lifelong passion. He poured his heart, knowledge, and tireless energy into building and growing the company. Even after more than four decades, Gary never truly retired. He remained actively involved, dedicated to the business he created and the people it served. His work ethic was legendary — he led by example and continued contributing with the same drive and commitment that defined his entire career.

Gary’s life was a beautiful balance of faith, family, work, and adventure. He was a man who lived fully and loved deeply. His steady faith, generous spirit, and quiet determination left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. He will be remembered not only for what he accomplished, but for the way he lived — with purpose, with joy, and with an open heart toward God and others.

Gary is survived by his devoted wife, Friedel; their four children and their spouses — Tiffiny and Wesley, Tanja and Chuck, Timothy and Kristena, and Gary II and Lindsay; and his grandchildren, Cole and Kyle (Tanja’s sons), Kaylee and Deegan (Timothy’s children), and Gary III (Gary II’s son). He leaves behind a legacy of faith, hard work, and love that will continue through the generations he cherished so deeply.
