James Anthony Margetich, 73, passed away on Saturday, December 2, 2017 just 79 days after the passing of his wife of over 50 years, Barbara, this past September. Born on January 20, 1944, in San Pedro, he was the son of Joseph and Marion Margetich. He attended Harbor Community College where he met the Now Forever love of his life- Barbara Haubrick in the fall of 1961. He was appointed to the Los Angeles Police Department in February,1965 and that same year joined the Army National Guard. While the rest of the guard fought in Vietnam, he fought the war here at home- aka The Watts Riots. He had an exceptional career with the LAPD, having worked Harbor Division as a young probationer, to patrol in 77th St Division and Metropolitan Division. He was selected as an instructor at the Police Academy, and was promoted to Sergeant and assigned again to 77th Division where he worked the Vice Unit, and was Adjutant to the Captain. Promoted to Sergeant 2, he was assigned to Planning and Research Division. He served with the Police Protective League before being promoted to Lieutenant and sent to Jail Division and Hollenbeck Division as a Watch Commander. His last assignment was Labor Relations Division as a Lieutenant 2, where he earned the respect of both Labor Organizations and Management Groups throughout the City for his honesty, integrity and insight. He was well thought of by the senior officers of the Department and a respected leader by those who worked for him. He retired after 28 years in 1993. During retirement he went to work with his brother Jerry at Y-Visionary Publishing Company. Then for several years he worked as a security manager for the Southern California Gas Co. where his expertise in Labor Relations was put to use. Once his wife retired he fully retired. He enjoyed time with his family; coaching soccer, golfing, avid Ram season ticket holder with his brothers, traveling wherever Barbara wanted to go and gambling with his wife any time she wanted to. He is survived by his children, Joesph R. Margetich and Julie A. Margetich, his daughter in law Cira Margetich, his grandchildren Caitlin C. Margetich, Maveric J. Margetich and Baby Girl-to-be Margetich, and his brothers; Daniel and Jerry Margetich. A viewing and Memorial service will be held on December 18th, 2017 at 10:00 am. at the Thomas Miller Mortuary at 1118 East Sixth Street, CA. 92879.
