JOHN ALFRED TORRES July 3, 1940 - March 5, 2018 John Alfred Torres passed away peacefully in his home at the age of 77, surrounded by his beloved wife of 53 years, Bonnie, and his loving daughters, Michele and Terry. Born in San Diego, California, John was raised there with his two brothers (deceased) by his parents Ellen and Manuel Torres. He graduated from Mission Bay High School in 1958. Growing up in San Diego instilled in John his lifelong love of skin diving, body surfing and Over-the-Line. After high School, John joined the Army. In 1961, he was recognized as the 4th Army Division's Soldier of the Year at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and was also a member of the Honor Guard for John F. Kennedy's inauguration. Upon leaving the Army, Sergeant Torres enrolled at San Diego State University, where he pledged Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity and majored in Business Administration. In 1964, John married the love of his life, Carolyn (Bonnie) Angier Banks, a native of La Jolla, California. After college, John's began work with the Chrysler Corporation. He was also the Personnel Director at San Bernardino Community Hospital, which was followed by many years as the Director of Human Resources for the City of Corona until his retirement. John always kept busy. He was an active member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Corona, on the Boards of the Visiting Nurses Association and the Altura Credit Union, a member of Rotary International, a supporting activities member of the Corona Regional Medical Center, a referee for AYSO, and, with Bonnie, Marriage Encounter presenters. Upon retirement, he and Bonnie devoted themselves to one of their favorite pastimes: travel. They went to their second home in Koloa, Kauai frequently. But Spain, Portugal, Italy, Mexico, Alaska, the Caribbean and most of the East Coast also called to them. John was an avid golfer and satisfied his passion for golf in most of these destinations. After living in Corona for over thirty years, John and Bonnie moved to a Four Seasons Retirement Community in 2005, where they have continued to be active. John is survived by his wife, Bonnie; his daughter Michele Torres and her spouse Emily Singer; his daughter, Terry Mateljan, and her husband, Nick; five grandchildren: Torrey, Melanie, Nicole, Mateo and Johnny; his nieces: Ann, Deanna (Chuck) and Kristina; his brother-in-law, David Tatman (Carol); his sister-in-law Elizabeth Tatman Rogers (Chris); as well as many cousins from the Torres family. John was a man who dedicated himself to his wife, family and his many friends. He was deeply loved by them all.
