Joseph Haviland, an Author of numerous books, and an international Teacher and Educator died unexpectedly on Wednesday, March 20, 2019 at his home in Riverside, California with his wife Alicia at his side. Born on January 25, 1959, in Mamaroneck, New York to Muriel and Chauncey Haviland, Joe was the seventh born of eleven children. From the earliest age, Joseph enjoyed putting his tremendous writing and communication skills to work, creating articles and stories to entertain and amuse family and friends. Following his graduation from Mamaroneck High School where he excelled as a long distance runner on both the Track and Cross Country teams, Joe enrolled in the Journalism program at New York University. He graduated from NYU in 1983 and put his writing skills to work at various Westchester County publications, including the local Gannett newspaper. Joe later formed the "Joe Haviland Show" on Cable television and had a good run with his witty banter and discussion of the events of the day. As a print Journalist, Joseph enjoyed interviewing numerous celebrities including actor Scott Baio, Richard Nixon's brother Ed, and many others through his position as a staff writer at United Media in New York City. Ultimately, Joe felt a calling to teach the underprivileged and decided to go back to get his Masters degree in Education from the University of Bridgeport in 1998. Soon thereafter, he joined his beloved wife Alicia, whom he married on June 15, 2006, in Seattle, Washington, in taking his many talents abroad to teach English as a second language in such faraway places as Panama, Venezuela, and Cambodia. It was while in Venezuela that Joe chronicled the everyday challenges that he and Alicia faced, and published his masterpiece entitled "Visions of Venezuela" which is available on Amazon in paperback form. After creating the "Francis Haviland Foundation" in honor of his late brother Francis, to help support education among Panama's poorest children and families, Joseph wrote, "Mas o Menos" which featured the poetry and stories, hopes and dreams of the underprivileged children he and Alicia worked with every day. Perhaps Joe will best be remembered for his wide engaging smile with his favorite pipe in his mouth… and his wonderfully infectious laughter as he entertained friends, and sat at his computer writing his blog "Letters from La La Land" to share his news and love with family and friends. Joseph is survived by his beloved wife Alicia, son Adam Snyder, and daughter Andrea Snyder, and granddaughter Laeden Snyder. Joseph was preceded in death by his parents Muriel and Chauncey Haviland, and his youngest brother Francis, and is also survived by nine siblings and their spouses: David and Debbie Haviland of Cold Spring, NY, Mary Haviland of North Kingstown, RI, Martha Winters of Springfield, MA, Anne Haviland-Martin and Denis Martin of Narragansett, RI, Elizabeth Haviland of Las Vegas, NV, Margaret Haviland-Garner and Ward Garner of Chicopee, MA and Newport, NC, Catherine Haviland and John Dittman of North Kingstown, RI, Peter Haviland of Dover, NH, John and Janet Haviland of Middletown, NY, and eleven nieces and nephews; Stephanie and Rebecca Haviland, Matthew Haviland, Kristen, Jenna, and Anna Winters, Joshua Martin, Sarah Garner, and Andrew, Alec, and Celia Haviland, as well as seven grand nieces and nephews.
