Longtime Cedaredge resident Margaret Mills passed away August 10, 2014, at Emeritus Senior Living in Corona, CA. She was 93. Funeral service plans are pending. Margaret Lorena James was born November 30, 1920, in Cedaredge to Robert and Ethel (Hart) James. She grew up in Cedaredge and attended school there, graduating from Cedaredge High School in 1938. Margaret married Homer Mills on June 17, 1939. They were married 67 years. June 17 turned out to be the anniversary of the famous Battle of Bunker Hill fought near Boston during the American Revolutionary War. For many years Margaret and Homer celebrated “Bunker Hill Day” on June 17. Margaret worked in Cedaredge for the United States Post Office for 33 years. She began as a clerk and retired as postmaster in 1979. She was a longtime member of the Rebekahs and the Cedaredge Community United Methodist Church. Margaret was a devoted wife and a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a meticulous and accomplished knitter. If one of her finished creations didnt meet her high standards, she would rip it apart and redo it. Her sweaters were sought and coveted by family and friends. She knitted personalized Christmas stockings and always kept a large supply of baby booties that she sent to family and community newborns. Although many offered to pay for her efforts, she would not accept. She was an avid walker. She walked several miles nearly every morning for years, often with friends. The walking group was often referred to as “Margarets walkers.” As a third generation descendent of a Cedaredge pioneering family, Margaret was proud of her residency and heritage and was often interviewed by those interested in the history of the town and the Surface Creek Valley. She loved nature and animals, especially her dachshunds. Margaret is survived by one son, Mike (Leslie) Mills of Cedaredge; two daughters, Kathy Morris of Eastvale, CA, and Linda (Dick) Barrow of Yorba Linda, CA; seven grandchildren: Sheryl Mills, Stephanie Mills, Faith Morris-Daverin, Trent (Laurie) Morris, Lane Morris, Sean Richards, and Heather (Richard) Richards-Crawford; eight great grand-children; one niece, Annette Jones; and two nephews, Gerry (Sue) Keen and Rick (LaDonna) Mills. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and two sisters, Lela (James) Aust and Hazel (James) Jones. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cedaredge Community United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 369, Cedaredge, CO, 81413 or the Surface Creek Animal Shelter, 265 SE High Country Ave, Cedaredge, CO, 81413.
