It is with a bittersweet mix of profound sadness and enduring affection that we announce the passing of Mary Barbabra Mathews, a force of nature who left an indelible mark on all who knew her. Mary departed this world at 71 years of age on April 29, 2025 in Corona, California, surrounded by the love of family and friends.
Mary was, to put it mildly, a woman who knew her own mind. Her bossy nature, often delivered with a raised eyebrow and an unwavering conviction, was simply her way of ensuring things were done right – which was her way. And while her stubbornness could occasionally try our patience, it was also the bedrock of her fierce loyalty and unwavering commitment to those she loved.
Beneath that sometimes-commanding exterior beat a heart overflowing with love and care. As a mother, she was a fierce protector, a constant source of support, and the unwavering center of our world. Her love extended beyond blood, embracing countless others as friends and, for some fortunate individuals, as a cherished bonus mom. In her various roles, she offered a listening ear, a comforting embrace, and often, unsolicited but ultimately appreciated advice.
Mary had a unique way of making everyone feel seen, even if it was through a slightly critical lens. Her honesty, though sometimes blunt, was always delivered with the best intentions at heart. She had a knack for knowing when you needed a gentle nudge, a firm push, or simply a warm hug. Her capacity for caring was immense, and she poured her energy into nurturing the relationships that mattered most to her.
Mary will be deeply missed by her children, Thomas Mathews, Brandy Shoemaker, Joseph Mathews, Kenny Parker, her sister Laura Jackson, special friends Robert Bowser, Jackie Guess, Vera Cuevas, friends who were like family, and her bonus children, Candy Ross, Jeffrey Mathews, Duane Mathews, Michelle Jackson and Charles Mathews Jr. Mary is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and her niece & nephews. Mary’s spirit, a unique blend of determination and tenderness, will live on in the countless lives she touched.
Mary will be interred at Pierce Brothers Crestlawn Memorial Park. At Mary’s request, there will be no services held. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Mary’s memory to the Susan G. Komen Foundation or ASPCA as these causes were close to her heart.
Though her commanding presence may be gone, the love she so freely gave and the lessons she so firmly imparted will continue to resonate in the hearts of all who were privileged to know her.
