Dr. Norman Lancelot Mitchell, 1928-2018 - A Riverside, California resident since 1967 passed peacefully in his rest on Saturday, December 1, 2018, surrounded by family. He celebrated his 90th Birthday on November 21st. Norman was born in the Moore Town village of Altamont (now Comfort Castle), Portland, Jamaica on November 21, 1928. He was the youngest of 12 siblings born to James and Susan (Rennock)Mitchell. An exceptional student, he was educated at West Indies College, the University of West Indies, Kingston, Jamaica and the University of Western Ontario, Canada. Upon achieving his Ph.D. Norman accepted a position at Loma Linda University where he served as a professor of Botany and Biology for 30 years. He enjoyed being in the great outdoors, often going on camping trips and touring the world's national wonders and parks. He also traveled to Africa, the Galpagos Islands, Europe, many of the Pacific and Caribbean islands and beyond. He was married in Ontario, Canada, to his wife of 45 years, Mavernie (Wright). Survived by his daughter Lisa, son Patrick, son-in-law Andrew, 6 grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews survive him. Funeral services will be held at the La Sierra University SDA Church on Friday, December 14, at 11: am. Interment at Crestlawn Memorial Cemetery immediately following the service.
