Reed Burkett Mckissick

January 31, 1957 — July 14, 2024

Reed Burkett McKissick of Corona passed away on July 14. Reed was born in Pennsylvania on Jan 31, 1957. Quite the Renaissance man, many of you who knew Reed enjoyed his sly sense humor, his love of animals (especially dogs), his creativity and his finesse in the kitchen.

Born to Lois and Charles (Dick) McKissick, he joined older brother Kurt in many pursuits. They included fishing, cooking, and laughing. As young men, Reed and Kurt earned the prestigious rank of Eagle, Boy Scouts of America’s highest honor. He was a high school scholar-athlete and a successful wrestler. After graduating from Elizabeth Forward High School in Elizabeth, PA, Reed went to Boston University and majored in mechanical engineering. Shortly after graduation, his travels took him to Texas then on to Southern California where his parents had moved. He soon devoted himself to many animal species, including frogs, water turtles and Nile monitor lizards.

One of his favorite challenges was competing in the Los Angeles County Fair’s Weber Barbecue Cookoff. After several years a winner in various categories, Reed cooked a rack of lamb to win the Black Ribbon for Best in Show, He also won a new barbecue, cash, and the recognition of being the winner,

Not long after, Reed spent hours upon hours on a new carving that became a labor of love ...his dog Augie the cocker spaniel. He loved all dogs and was known as The Dog Whisperer of Corona at his favorite dog park.

He is survived by his brother, Kurt (Karen Kaczman) McKissick, his devoted partner of 32 years, Andrea Goettinger, and all his “children” ---- Angus, Augie, Baron, Bonnie, Dixie, Patches and Rascal.
