Robert Anthony Germann was born on October 7, 1925 in Los Angeles, CA. In his early years he was raised in Santa Barbara, where his love for sailing was nurtured. When he was 19 his father died and his mother returned to Los Angeles with her three sons. Robert attended Loyola High School and graduated in 1943. He entered the United States Navy and under their ROTC program attended Loyola University, and graduated with the rank of Ensign. He continued his service in the Navy, while attending dental school at College of the Pacific in San Francisco, CA. He completed his post graduate studies in Oral Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1949, he married Mary Ellen Luppert, to whom he was married for 65 years. Together they raised eight children. He established his oral surgery practice in 1959 in Oceanside, California; he was the first, and for many years, the only oral surgeon in North County. In the latter years of his flourishing practice, he introduced the cutting edge procedure of dental implants to the residents of North County. He retired in 1999. Robert was dedicated to the growing community of Oceanside. His leadership on projects like the Children's Parade and Harbor Days in Oceanside was influential. He was an active member of Rotary Club; coordinated events including the San Luis Rey Fiesta, the prestigious Heritage Ball; the Mardi Gras for the Academy of the Little Flower; and the Bal de Fleur, for the North County Concert Association. All these events indicated his love for Oceanside and his hope for its future. One lasting contribution to the city was the design and project management of the Welcoming Arches located on the 5 freeway as you enter Oceanside from the north. Robert had a passion for sailing, and a particular interest in wooden boats. At the age of 78 this love for the sea led him on the voyage of a lifetime. He single-handedly began "The Odyssey of Ragmeg" a journey which began in Nova Scotia, took him through the Panama Canal and culminated under a rainbow as he entered the Oceanside Harbor three years later. Robert was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a loyal friend. He has been referred to as a True Renaissance Man and a gentleman and has left his imprint on the lives of all who knew him. He will be sorely missed. He is predeceased by his wife, his two brothers, three of his children, and one grandchild. He is survived by one son and four daughters, 13 grand children, and seven great grandchildren.
