Shirley Maurine Broadhurst

December 25, 1931 — October 23, 2022

Our dear Shirley, December 25, 1931 - October 23, 2022 Shirley Maureen Dreher was born on a farm in Missouri in 1931, she was proud of her life on the farm and spoke often about the chores that had to be done before and after school (she attended a one room school house). The first two farms that her "daddy" owned had no electricity and no indoor toilets. Most impressive to most of us is that she learned to drive a tractor at the age of 9. No license required. Not long after high school graduation Shirley, as most young girls, choose to get married and happily moved with her husband to sunny southern California. At some point the husband was given the boot, but So-Cal was home for the rest of her life. Shirley found work at a car dealership where she learned the ins & outs of office work such as bookkeeping, office management and how to have fun at the "after-hour parties". It was at her last dealership that her boss introduced Shirley to Steve. Steve proposed to Shirley not long after their romance began but Shirley made him wait 5 years! In 1972 they tied the knot in Las Vegas; there, they also attended a live Elvis Presley concert. Shirley gracefully took on her role as wife, step-mother, and grandmother in one big step. She was embraced heartily by the large Broadhurst clan, becoming the "matriarch" of our annual camping trip/family reunion. To capture Shirley's history is to understand her personality. She had an infectious laugh and a great sense of humor. She was always welcome to any social gathering not because she was the life of the party but because of her great listening skills and her memory of names, faces and the personal stories told to her The start of Steve & Shirley's relationship was their love of cars, but they also enjoyed football and entertaining family and friends, for which they had many. One of Shirley's passions in the last 10 years or so was playing Fantasy Football. When Shirley won the Broadhurst Fantasy Football league, she boldly stated "mark that off of my bucket-list". One last note, during Shirley's several recent hospitalizations the doctors and nurses repeatedly would ask "what is your secret, you don't look or act 90 years old?" To which she would reply, "Well, it isn't due to clean living". She always got the last laugh! That is a life well lived for 90 years… "To-US-Gals", with a Vodka Gimlet!
