Susan Camille Williams

July 29, 1953 — January 13, 2018

In Houston, Texas, in 1953, Peggy Gloyd and Lee Hardy Turner were in love. On July 29th, their love produced a baby girl, who they christened, Susan Camille. The relationship didnt work out and Susan spent her early life in Houston and in Detroit, Michigan with her mother and grandparents. Peggy provided a home life for she and Susan as best she could and while watching TV one day, decided to move from the cold of Detroit to the sunny skies of Southern California. Peggy and Susan packed their bags and moved to Los Angeles, where Peggy continued her nursing ambitions to provide a source of income for her family. In high school, Susan met Michele Miller, who remained a family friend and confidant throughout Susans adult life. They graduated from Crenshaw High School in 1971 and began lifes journey as women. Susan was a beautiful and stylish young woman, thin and fashionable, who worked part time in retail sales, and attended school at El Camino Community College in Torrance, California. She studied Office Administration and used those skills to market herself in the workplace as a business office manager in the medical and legal fields. Susan was a determined and resilient young woman experiencing life as a single Black woman, making it on her own. In 1984, after a broken relationship, Susan bore a daughter who she named Alicia. She raised her daughter as a single mother, diligently providing the love and care that only a mother can. Susan landed a job at a L.A. law firm in early 1986, and met one of the Document Analysts already working there, Kenneth Williams, a new resident in California from Oklahoma. He shared her love of tacos and burritos and they frequently went to lunch together and a love developed between the two of them. Kenneth left the law firm later that year and started working for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) in West L.A. By this time, their love had blossomed and Susan introduced him to Alicia, where they became the best of friends, hanging out at Venice Beach while Susan was at work or on the weekends. By 1989, Susan and Kenneths love had grown and he knew he wanted to be a family with Susan and Alicia. They married in 1989. Susan and Kenneths union bore Alicia a brother in 1990, who they named, Carson. The next year, Kenneth received a promotion at the VA to the central office headquarters in Washington, DC. Susan moved her family to Alexandria, Virginia where she settled down to raise her family. With Susans work experience and determination, she managed to obtain employment with one of the top trial attorneys in the Northern Virginia area, managing his office and business affairs. She held down a 9 to 5 job for 17 years while alternately managing the activities of her children, being “Mother of the Year” consistently. She always maintained her stylish attitude and made many friends while living on the East Coast. In 2005, Susan retired to spend her time caring for Kenneths father, who came to live with the family after being diagnosed with brain cancer. Her loving sprit prevailed as she juggled those responsibilities of being a mother to Alicia, who had garnered a college scholarship to Norfolk State University, and Carson, who was suffering the usual teenage angst. Susan was the perfect mother and wife who placed her children first and provided a wholesome family life for she and Kenneth. After Susans father in laws death, Kenneth retired from VA and the family returned to Los Angeles in 2007. Kenneth had experienced some serious health concerns in the recent years and Susan stood by his side holding her family together in a comforting reassuring love that was eternal. Susan and Kenneth moved to Riverside County in 2010 to relax in their retirement years, but Susan decided to take a part time job at T.J. Maxx, where she met a dear friend, Tricia Reel, who was by Susans side as she took her last breath. In their spare time, they gallivanted around the Inland Empire lunching and wine-tasting with reckless abandonment. They had so much fun together Susan was always excited about their excursions. When Susan was diagnosed with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) in 2013, she didnt let that deter her. She took care of her health and continued to lead life full of joy and hope that was God-filled and spirit directed. Not overtly religious, Susan shared her belief in God with Kenneth as they traveled together through lifes journey. Susans COPD and a bout with pneumonia was overwhelming and she departed this life On January 13, 2018 with her family by her bedside. Susan is in Heaven now with her beloved mother, Peggy and is reaping lifes reward in Gods arms. Susan is survived by her loving husband, Kenneth; her daughter Alicia Wheatley (Ray); her son Carson (Taylor); two sisters, Kathy Grady and Stephanie Davenport; two aunts, Bennie Johnson (William) and Charles Ruby Jackson, who were always there for her throughout her life; four grandchildren, Cheyenne Wheatley, Chayla Wheatley, Carter Williams, and Chanel Wheatley, who she loved with all her heart; her first cousins, Larry, Kenneth and Kevin Ware of Houston; her two best friends Michelle Miller (Wil) and Tricia Reel; and a host of friends and acquaintances who all remember her exuberance, her class and style, her inner and outer beauty, and her abominable spirit that made her a unique individual with the courage to get up and face each day with a smile.
