Yury Lavygin was born in Moscow, Russia on August 6, 1944. He was the youngest of five siblings. World War II had left his father with several injuries and eventually put him in a wheelchair. Yurys parents struggled with being able to provide food for the family; he often recalled being overtaken by the overwhelming feelings of hunger when being taught at school as a child. Thus, the strong desire to help to provide to his family compelled him to join a work force at the age of 14. He met his bride Rita at the age of 21 at a summer camp; three years later they were married. They became parents of two daughters, Oxana and Tanya. Having a young family only increased Yurys desire to be able to provide and care for the needs of the family in such a way, so there would never be any unmet needs. His kindness and generosity was often revealed through his willingness to extend help to other people in great needs, particularly children. In 1990, at the age of 46, Yury and his wife agreed to move to the United States, aspiring to give a better future for their daughters. Once again, Yurys willingness to accept any hard jobs eventually landed him a job at a big warehouse. Even the very limited English did not get in the way of being able to make new friends at work; he often attempted to teach them Russian and volunteered himself for additional hours to help with extra work. His strong champion spirit motivated Yury to give his best in everything. In 2011 Yury retired from the warehouse; he was appreciative to all the people he had an opportunity to work with; he was also grateful of the life he built for his family. He was diagnosed with an incurable illness, MDS in early 2013. Despite the health trials he was about to face, his undefeated character strengthened his will to live and fight to the end. He never complained of the hardships he faced and remained strong until he took his last breath on March 9, 2017. Yury will always be remembered as an amazing man with a strong undefeated character and a kind and generous soul.
